This notice provides information about the commencement of Phase 3 of the Inquiry’s hearings. There is also information about applying for “leave to appear” for this phase.
Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry Hearings: Commencement of Phase 3
On 23 October the Inquiry will begin hearing evidence relating to Phase 3 of its investigations into residential child care establishments run by non-religious and voluntary organisations.
Phase 3 hearings will begin with a case study about residential child care establishments run by:
- Quarriers, including:
- Quarriers Village
- Seafield School Ardrossan (formerly known as Southannan, Fairlie, Largs)
- Overbridge, previously at Drumbreck Road, Glasgow and latterly at St Andrews Drive, Glasgow
- The Aberlour Child Care Trust, including:
- Aberlour Orphanage, Aberlour
- The Dowans, Aberlour
- Aberlour Children’s Home, Quarry Hill, Keith
- The Sycamore Cluster, Fife
- Barnardo’s, including:
- Glasclune, North Berwick
- Balcary, Hawick
- Tyneholme, Pencaitland, East Lothian
- Craigerne, Peebles
- Blackford Road/South Oswald Road, Edinburgh
- Winton Drive, Glasgow
- Thorntoun School, Cross House, near Kilmarnock
Hearings will be held at the Inquiry’s hearing venue, situated on the 3rd floor of Rosebery House, 9 Haymarket Terrace, Edinburgh EH12 5EZ. This case study is expected to conclude about the end of January 2019.
At this stage, applications may be made for leave to appear for the whole or part of the Quarriers, Barnardo’s and The Aberlour Child Care Trust case study. Anyone wishing to apply should do so as soon as possible and, in any event, no later than 3 August 2018.

Members of the public do not need “leave to appear” to watch hearings from the public areas in the Inquiry venue. They are welcome to do so at any time.
